Published quarterly by The Illustrated Press, Inc., ILLUSTRATION was a beautiful, educational, and scholarly magazine devoted to the history of American illustration art. First launched in October 2001, the publication profiled over 200 artists in 84 issues. Printed in full color, each issue featured the highest quality printing, photography and color reproductions of original illustration art available anywhere. No: 77 ‘de\u00a0<\/b>In this issue we feature the work of Raymond Johnson, one of the great \u201cmystery men\u201d of paperback illustration, an artist whose work has been widely collected in the vintage paperback field for decades, but whose biography has remained elusive. Until now. This article has been in the works for years, as author Lowell Wilson and associates have combined their efforts to produce the most comprehensive story of the artist\u2019s life yet published. Our next feature is the latest from regular contributors Dennis Raverty, Ph.D., and Dennis Dittrich, continuing their series examining the history of illustration in America. This is one of the best installments yet.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Our final feature concerns the work of pin-up artist and slick magazine illustrator Fritz Willis, probably best known for his scries of art instruction books for Walter T. Foster publishers. Some of these books remain in print today. In the 1980s I myself spent many hours drawing and painting from the pages of these books. Early cigarette ads depicted womens enticement with cigarettes, but because of propriety, women were not shown actually smoking. In a Chesterfield ad, for example, a young couple has parked in the shade of some trees (fig. 1). Their physical closeness implies a certain intimacy between them. The mans authority is established both by his higher position in the design and also by his hand casually resting on the steering wheel, holding a lit cigarette.<\/span><\/div>\n

For Freud, both the car and the cigarette would be interpreted as symbols of male, phallic power. ‘Fhe woman, who has turned her body away, as if rejecting his advances, nonetheless glances over her shoulder in his direction, apparently attracted by the cigarette, at which she gazes longingly. \u201cBlow some my way,\u201d she coyly suggests, as he brings his face forward towards hers.<\/span><\/div>\n
